Book Review: 90 Rules for Entrepreneurs: The Codex of Hustle by Marnus Broodryk

I have read tons of books about entrepreneurs, business owners, and self help over the course of the last few years as I embarked on my own entrepreneurial journey. I get mesmerized by the number of books in book stores these days relating to business processes, rules, or even just any form of entrepreneurial drivel.

I was honestly apprehensive at first when I saw the word Rules in the title of this book, because business and entrepreneurship in today’s dynamic world don’t have fast rules that can be applicable in a structured framework. To my surprise I found Marnus’s approach in the book quite different, especially since he has a well established reputation after appearing on the South African edition of the Shark Tank show for entrepreneurs.

The book is far from preaching about rules, but rather little practices that Marnus himself applied in his own entrepreneurial journey and can be easily applied for the every day person; most entrepreneurs can be ego driven and bravado about their entrepreneurial accomplishments and it is safe to say Marnus appears far driven from egocentricity in this book, which is why someone who may just be starting out in their entrepreneurial journey or is an established entrepreneur will relate a lot to what Marnus has described in the book and find his ‘rules’ very useful.

The structure is the most appealing aspect of the book; each chapter (rule) is a 2 page format which makes it an easy read, while also allowing a reader to take in bite size information that is easy to consume. I managed to the finish this book much quicker than other entrepreneurial based books due to this structure.

The book uses many South African examples and illustrations to highlight certain aspects Marnus writes about, but these situations can be very applicable in other global entrepreneurial ventures or for international readers as well.

I wish I had this type of book when I was first starting to explore my own entrepreneurial journey, it’s as simple as that.
